Dressing for an occasion is important. Especially when interviewing for a job. When applying for a fancier position, one must present themselves in a manner that states that you are put together, clean, and have the ability to be well mannered in a tight upscale job. Avoiding excessive use of fragrance is important, if need be squirt a tiny bit on your wrist and rub it around. Or to avoid people who have allergies to perfumes don’t wear any to the interview. Some scents are stronger than others. When dressing formal it is important to know how fancy to dress. For example wearing a tux to an interview when you were required to wear black slacks, and a white button down.

Both look very elegant, but one stands stronger than the other in the eyes of your future employer. Shoes and belts are important to the interviewing process, as far as belts go I’d say wear one that matches the outfit color wise. Shoes, depending on if it’s fancy or not wear clean shoes. Ones with grass stains on them, say that your not a very well organized and messy person. This next part is strictly for the girls, keep the jewelry very simple. Don’t wear anything too flashy since it could be distracting, and also throw your outfit coloring off. It is essential to look very nice and clean cut when going into any kind of interview.

Another example is when I had an interview at Charlotte Russe in my local mall. Since I was a senior in high school and unaware of how important the outfit is when interviewing, I showed up in sweats and an over sized tee shirt. A sloppy look to say the least, the lady interviewing me didn’t look too pleased. However, when I applied for a job at my community college I attend to work in the bookstore. I wore a off yellow skirt, a pale white tee shirt, and a off yellow cardigan to go over my shirt. For shoes I wore a white ballet flat. Pulled my hair into a tight pony tale. Wore only a coat of mascara and lip gloss, and walked into that interview confident with my head held high. And guess what? I got the job! So not only is what you wear important, it represents who you are. When you wear it with confidence it adds and extra sparkle.

Remember to always clean your shoes and make sure your clothes are pressed. When in doubt about corporate culture, dress in a suit. Always.

Good luck interviewing!
